Mike spent 18 years as an Infantry Officer in the British Army. In 1982 he was awarded the General Officer Commanding Commendation for Bravery and saw service throughout the world. A very keen sportsman, he represented the Army and Combined Services Rugby teams, and played cricket for the Infantry. After retiring from the Army in 1992, he became Operations Manager for Challenger World specialising in outdoor management training a post he held for 3 years before joining Will Carlings 'Insights' Ltd as Director of Training.
Insights' Ltd gave Mike the opportunity to design and deliver leadership development and management training programmes for a number of UK business teams including KPMG, Royal Mail, British Telecom, Vickers Plc, Standard & Poors and many others. He has also delivered training and motivational presentations to a variety of sports teams including Harlequins RFC, The Royal Sun Alliance Ocean Racing Team and the England Cricket Team. He is presently running a Leadership Assessment Centre in Abu Dhabi for the Government and Armed Forces.
A keen ski-mountaineer and rock climber, he has led expeditions over the Alps, Mexican volcanoes, the high mountains of Africa as well as the deep jungles of Central America. In addition to his love of altitude, in 2003 he and a colleague Rob Abernethy attempted to become the first team ever to row unaided across the Indian Ocean. 2000 miles into their journey, battered by tropical storms and without a watermaker, they eventually had to abandon their row after some 50 days at sea in a dramatic nightime rescue conducted by the Australian Navy. It was a fantastic life changing experience and both have vowed to return to finish the journey! His book, 'Wild Waters in the Roar' published by Authorhouse, is available online through Amazon and many traditional bookstores.
